I didn’t sleep well last night. I had a lot on my mind. My alarm went off at 5:30 am and I didn’t want to get up but I had to. We had a tight schedule to keep today. We got dressed quickly and drove out to our starting point. My dad dropped us off and drove up ahead to meet with us later.
We had 12 miles to walk before getting to our rendezvous point for people who would be joining us later. We had to step quickly. Luckily, we had an amazing bike path the whole way into downtown. The West Ashley Greenway is incredible. Beautiful scenery with a smooth trail for about 10 miles. We took it all the way into Charleston only stopping one time at a Krispy Kreme because the hot sign was on and we just couldn’t resist. The trail was quiet and gorgeous. Marshland all around and the occasional old house with gardens and spring blooms. If you are ever in the area go rent a bike and take a ride out and back on it. You won’t regret it.
We got into downtown Charleston and walked through College of Charleston campus and then up to Marion Square. People were just arriving as we were right on time. Everyone was there within thirty minutes and it was a great amount of people for 2 days notice on a Tuesday afternoon. Some news crews were there too. We did some interviews and got that out of the way and then we took photos and started the walk.
We walked through the city and then onto the Ravenel Bridge. The long huge bridge from Charleston to Mount Pleasant. It was amazing. Especially with all of the people. We were walking and talking and holding up signs. People were honking and waving for us as they passed us. It was a highlight of the entire trip for me. Very powerful. Families and friends of people who have lost their lives to a drug overdose. We all had that understanding of the importance of what we were doing. It may be a small thing to a giant problem but we did something today and we did it together. I was very proud of all of us.
We made it up and over and then went to a restaurant called The Shelter on the other side of the bridge. One of the couples who walked with us own the place and were nice enough to feed us all. We all hung out for quite a while and had a lot of great conversation. Then we all said our goodbyes for now and me and stick went back to my dad’s.
Everyone was so helpful and supportive today. I can’t even begin to express how amazing it made my heart feel. Today was a great day and I know that we were all connected from the spirits of our loved ones. Me and Stick have a news interview tomorrow and then we are thinking of taking a trip to the Atlanta to visit with family. I will explain all that in tomorrow’s post.
The Charleston bridge walk turned out great. Everyone there was there because they were supposed to be and it meant a whole lot to me.
Good night!
