Day 163 – 21 miles – 2,109 total

We started early. Trying to beat the heat. As we were unloading the car and setting up our carts, a man walked up and was asking all kinds of fun questions. He wasn’t sure what to make of us but he was enjoying seeing the craziness unfold. He was very goofy but goodhearted and kind. The locals will say that he was the typical ‘Maine-iac’, a word used to describe the people up here who spend a lot of time indoors due to harsh winters. It was a good start to the day.

We had sidewalks all morning and it made these go smoothly. We all just took in the great sceneries in Maine and kept steppin. We made great time all day.

We were walking down a road and saw two jogging strollers on the front of someone’s lawn that looked as if they were free. We have a friend who will be joining our walk soon. I’ll give more info on her later but we were worried about how she was going to be able to carry her gear. Sure enough, the perfect solution unfolds for us naturally. We knocked on the door to check to see if it was in fact free. We didn’t want to assume and then get arrested for stealing a baby stroller.

The woman was happy to give it to us when we told her what it was all about. She held it for us until the end of the day when we could pick it up.

Right after that, we hit a trail called the Eastern Trail. It runs from Kennebunk into Portland. We were excited to not have to deal with traffic anymore today.

The trail was great. We all enjoyed it, Domino as well. I gave her the cue for her to walk with free will rather than at my left where she is trained to go. She knows the difference and can tell when it’s safe or unsafe to run free. She was having fun taking chase to all the little animals alongside the trail. She never tries to hurt them, just chase them and play with them. She always comes right back. We were in an area where it was unlikely to encounter a predator. Total freedom. She deserved some of that after being held tight through all of the cities we’ve been in for the last couple of months.

Lindsay’s parents came out to meet us. They were trying to figure out the best way to help us out. We all explored our options then we came up with the idea to call the fire department in the town ahead and see if they could store our carts for the night so that we could all fit in her stepdad’s Prius and go back to the beach house without them having to go all the way back there and bringing our SUV to us.

Lindsay called the Biddeford Fire department and they were happy to help. We routed our way there and walked the last few miles of the day in great spirits.

The fire station was awesome. The Captain greeted us and showed us around while asking about our travels. They posed for a picture for us and we got to meet some of the heroes who save countless lives with Narcan.

Lindsay’s parents came and got us and we picked up the stroller on the way back. We showered and got ready for dinner.

They took us out for a very nice meal at a restaurant in a beautiful marsh. I got clam chowder and a lobster dinner. A real treat. A real Maine lobster dinner! I had to have some help to show me how to eat it all since I’ve never had a lobster quite like this before. A new and delightful experience. It was so good!

We left feeling stuffed and sleepy but still had one stop to make. We went to Hubble Light house for the sunset. It was incredible and so relaxing. I could’ve slept there on the rocks. This was postercard Maine. When you think of a lighthouse on a rocky coast this is the image that comes up. It was so surreal. I of course couldn’t resist jumping and climbing on all the rocks.

Then we headed back to the beach house where I’m in my same spot outside on the balcony. Stars and ocean air. What a great day! I love Maine right now!
