Day 58 – 20 miles – 789 miles

We were up early and my brother Cameron decided to walk with us. Paula made us all some breakfast as we geared up for a cold and damp day. Our starting point was about an hour and a half drive away. Me and Stick took our support car and Cameron took his truck.

We drove up and left Cameron’s truck about 10 miles ahead from our starting point. Then we drove our car to the starting point and got out and started walking. It was cold and wet out but very little traffic on Sunday morning. It was great having one of my siblings to walk with me. We all walked and talked for the first 6 miles then took a break.

After the roadside snack break we walked the remaining 5 miles to his truck. We all had headphones in and spent some time to ourselves for this stretch. We got to his truck and then drove back to our car and then drove up to our ending point to the day where there was a gas station with a church’s chicken where we grabbed lunch.

This was the moment of truth for Cameron. He had a way out. All he had to do was go back and drop us off where his truck was and then he could keep driving home. He toughed it out though. We drove back and left his truck there and then walked up to our car where we would go and bring him back to his truck and then he could go back to Savannah and we would go back to Charleston.

All was going well. Cameron did great. 20 miles right there with us. We got to the car and were all happy to be done and ready to get home when i realized that I left the keys to our car in his truck. 9 miles behind us. And we were in the middle of nowhere. No Lyft, no uber, no taxi. Damn.

We did all we could do… try to hitch a ride. We asked everyone coming out of the gas station and after a while finally got a ride. We were very grateful. After that we had to drive back to my dad’s house. I couldn’t help but notice that we were doing a whole lot of driving to be walking across America lol.

My dad and Paula had spaghetti waiting for us and we got all fed up and got to hang out and watch some TV before calling it a night.

That is so great that your brother walked with you. forgot your keys though…I have to laugh. It reminds me of a time when I locked my keys in the trunk of my car at the beach. My brother drove all the way down from Newark, DE, about 1 1/2 hours to bring them to me. That’s Love. Sounds like you’re doing great even with obstacles.
