St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah. Yuck.
I was not excited about joining this ridiculous frat party with a millions of crazy green people. I was excited to take advantage of the opportunity to raise some overdose awareness though. Me, Stick, and Cameron all threw our Freedom to Grow t-shirts on and brought signs with us to hold up and spread positive and informative messages about the overdose epidemic. We didn’t know what kind of responses that we would get but we were ready to do our service work for the day no matter what.
We had a hard time navigating through the wave of green people but we finally met up with the camera crew. We set up and held the signs while the cameras filmed and the first spot was a total bust. It just wasn’t thought out and people were confused about what was going on. We decided to change locations to a less crowded area.
People were way more engaging there. Mostly positive feedback. A lot of people who have been affected and some people just being nice to us for standing there with messages of hope. It was a very interesting experience. It took a lot of courage for me to do it. One amazing person was very helpful for inspiring me to stand and hold the signs. It was an 11 year old boy named Caiden.
Caiden is our film director’s son who lost his father to this epidemic. He was standing tall and proud while engaging with strangers to deliver a helpful message. I loved it. He really taught me a lot. He taught me that the children left behind from this want to help too. We all need to provide them with more options to do so and also more options for support to talk out the emotions of losing a parent in a healthy way. Caiden was my hero of the day.
We started to get tired and hungry and needed a break. We wrapped up our filming for the day and then spent a good two hours trying to get out of Savannah and back to Pooler where my brother lives. We just relaxed and ate a lot after that. Too tired for any formal celebrations. Nothing exciting happened from here. Just laying around being lazy.
