It rained on us last night. Stick’s tent let in a lot of water and his sleeping gear was wet. We rolled up all of our things and packed up. More rain was coming. We had to get on the move.
Laying by the portapotty, we noticed that someone had left us some drinks and snacks. There was no note so we don’t know who it was but we sure were thankful. We had a quick “breakfast” and then got rolling.
The first 3 miles were all uphill. We reached the highest elevation that we’ve had on this walk so far. Nearly 800 feet. Now that we are off the coast it is constantly up and down with a gradual increase in elevation as we go.
We stopped quickly at the top of the hill but I knew that we needed to push on due to rain coming in soon. We had 6 miles before the next anything which takes about 2 hours to walk. Nothing but trees between here and there. We needed to go.
We rolled on and sure enough, the rain started. It wasn’t so bad at first. We all had tarps over our carts and rain jackets on. It wasn’t cold so that helped. It never let up though.
Eventually, we simply got wet. Feet, pants, hands, face, everything was soaked. We kept a positive mindset about it though. And we kept pushing.
Eventually we made it to the Brookton General Store. The woman inside was so kind and let us stay inside and use the bathroom to dry off and change clothes. She also made us some breakfast sandwiches and chocolate milk.
We sat there for a while talking with locals as they came and went. It’s been very interesting to walk the east coast and hear the different accents as you get into different areas. Northern Maine definitely has it’s own sound.
Jessie’s parents came and rescued us. They brought us our car and paid for a hotel room for us. We drove there and enjoyed being normal people with walls and a roof.
The rain came down harder and harder and never let up all day. So glad that we were able to get out of it. We’ll get back to it tomorrow and pick up where we left off.
