Day 188 – 17 miles – 2,421 total

We got dropped off at our starting spot by Jessie’s mom, Penny. Her and her husband will be helping us this weekend. We are grateful too, especially since we don’t know anyone out in this very rural stretch of Maine.

We started and crossed a river into Possamaquoddy Indian Reservation. A few people stopped and talked to us while we were there. They were very nice and supportive. We were back in the US in a few miles.

Jessie’s foot was bothering her. We had to stop to treat it. It took a while to figure it out but with teamwork and persistence we came up with a solution to keep us going. Jessie played her part by staying tough. She is really impressing me everyday. The adjustment that we made helped. She didn’t have a problem with it for the rest of the day.

We stopped at a general store a few miles up the road. It was around our halfway point and there was nothing else around for miles so we knew we better go in and take advantage of the services. Little did we know what would happen next…

The owner and a few patrons came out of the store applauding us for making it this far. They had heard all about us and said we were all over their Facebook today. Our message is getting out there!

The owner took us in and let us have sandwiches and drinks on the house and even gave us a $100 donation. He wouldn’t let us buy anything. We talked to some patrons of the store as well. One mother was crying because she had almost lost her daughter. Another woman had a granddaughter who just got Hep C from using dirty needles. This is America.

After lunch we were a mile or so down the road and Carolyn, the woman driving the RAM van around the country, passed us by and pulled over. We got to hang with her some more. She is quite a character and I love it! It was a fun stop for us.

The rest of the walking day was nice and calm. Light traffic and cloudy skies to keep the heat from the sun away. People stopping and honking here and there to keep us motivated. It was great.

We came up to a tiny town called Topsfield. As we pulled up, a guy who works in the construction office on the corner came out to take our picture. He said they do a highlight of the week for the people who put the money up for his DOT project. He was going to share our story for this week.

He asked if we needed anything and I asked if he minded if we call it a day and camp in the lot where his office trailer is. They have a portapotty set up and that would be a huge perk for us in these parts. He was more than happy to give us permission.

He told us where to set up and then he told us that he was going to let us in on the big secret…. the location of the key to the extra special portapotty. There were two right next to each other. He has to pay for them both so he has a key on one for VIP only haha. Pretty funny. While we wanted to make fun of him for doing that, we all three found ourselves using the nice one instead of the other one haha.

We set up our tents and ate dinner. Forecast is calling for rain tonight so hopefully nothing too bad. Anyway, off to sleep. Got more miles to walk tomorrow!
