Day 162 – 12 miles – 2,088 total

We started out in Kittery, Maine where we finished yesterday. We were to be on route 1 all day. We were going to be walking until Stick was going to get picked up by Pete to go get a tattoo. So we were counting on an easy breezy day of walking across America.

We started and got about 7 miles in without even noticing. We had a good shoulder to walk in and a rhythm going. We stopped quickly to watch someone get arrested that got pulled over on the road by the York PD. We sent good vibes out to both the person in handcuffs and the person who was a police officer. Hoping they both have safe days…

We kept steppin. A few miles up the road we saw a guy approaching on a bicycle that was loaded down with gear. He stopped to talk to us. It was a great conversation. He was riding his bike around the border of the US and is a few weeks from finishing. We shared stories and talked about possibly joining up in the future for another adventure. His name is Brad and you can follow him on Facebook on the page Mile Mile and a Half.

A few miles later, we stopped for a break and a woman and her husband who live in Maine came out to meet us and show support. She wrote a book called “I Can’t Do This Anymore.” Check it out. She has quite a story and it may be the one you need to hear. They were both very kind to us and offered to help out if we needed it while in Maine.

A couple miles after that, we stopped in a town called Ogunquit. As we were coming into town, a young couple on a moped stopped to talk to us and were very touched by our cause. They had multiple friends who they have lost to overdoses. While they were still there talking to us, another person comes to us and says that his nephew passed from an overdose. This is happening way too often. Everywhere we go.

We stopped in town for a lunch and then Pete came to get Stick. We were done. Pete took me back to our support car and I drove back to get Lindsay and our stuff. Then we headed to York, Maine.

Lindsay’s mother and stepdad were coming down to help us out and had a friend who let us all use their beach house. Lindsay and I got their first. A huge 3 story beauty with about 6 beds to choose from. I chose the 3rd story balcony with the ocean view. Just laid my sleeping mat down and grabbed my sleeping bag. It will be a great night to sleep outside.

When Lindsay’s family arrived, we all settled in and then they took us out to dinner. We had a great time at this awesome spot in a Marina. We ate while the sun went down.

Maine is so beautiful. I’m sitting here looking up at the stars right now and listening to the ocean waves. A great moment. Now time to rest up for another 20 something miles tomorrow!
