We ate breakfast at the nearby truck stop and then headed out to walk. Within our first mile, we crossed the Rhode Island state line. Our 12th state. We had a challenging day ahead of us due to hills. We were cutting inland a lot because Rhode Island has a really weird coast that doesn’t make a lot of sense to follow.
On our first big hill, a woman pulled over to talk to us. Senator Morgan. That was unexpected. We talked to her about our walk and about how important addiction treatment and harm reduction are during this crisis. We posed for a photo and we went out separate ways. It was so cool of her to stop for us.
A few miles and a hill or two later, another woman pulled over and got out to give us something. She gave us each a penny. She placed the penny in my hand and said this means that an angel is watching over you. Then she grabbed my hand with her hand and said that this was an angel hug. Then she tapped her finger on my hand while making a kissing sound and said this is an angel kiss. Then she did the same thing to Stick. Darlene the Angel Lady… I’ll keep that penny forever.
We passed through some weird little towns. It is another world up here in rural New England. We stopped in a corner store and got a great sandwich for lunch. Then went from town to town taking in the scenery. This is the America that people miss when they take the interstates.
Lindsay showed up soon after the towns and just like that, we were all walking together. Lindsay, and her dog Thina, walked coast to coast across America last year and then rode a bike back. She wanted to support our walk and she came to join us for a couple of weeks.
Lindsay is awesome. Like all crossers (people who have traversed the country by foot), she doesn’t let fear or pain control her. She has been able to experience some amazing things because of this. I’m so happy that she joined us.
Thina and Domino weren’t really sure what to make of the situation. They want to play with each other but girls being girls, they are testing each other too. They had a few fights but were mostly playful. I think they’ll adapt quickly and be fine. We are being responsible and doing our parts to help them adjust.
We got to walking and we had some serious hills. The worst ones we’ve had yet. We just kept on fighting through it. By the end of the day we were all beat. We found a spot to set up camp and made our camp stove dinners. We tried to all hang out for a while but we were tired. I fell asleep before the sun even went down. Domino was sleeping before I was.
