We woke up and got ready before the sun came up. We were all fresh and clean after utilizing all of the facilities at the campground that we were at. Stick was feeling good. We were ready to get back to it.
We stopped and grabbed chikfila before heading to the church where we left off yesterday. We left the car there with a note saying that we would get it later and started walking.
We had a little stretch of back road and then we had to take the busy hwy 17 for miles until we could get on another backroad. The stretch of hwy 17 sucked.
There was a little shoulder that our carts could barely fit on. Normally, this would’ve been fine but there were rumble strips carved into the road. We couldn’t push our carts over them. It was too shaky. The carts would fall apart. We had to put our right wheel into the traffic lane to prevent from hitting the bumps. So half of our carts were in the direct line of oncoming traffic.
Thankfully the traffic was light. There were two lanes so cars would get over for us most of the time. We made it safely.
We were very happy to hit the next side road, Old Georgetown Road. This road was hard-packed sand and seemed to be the land of the lost. There were beautiful homes and landscapes all over. A real gem right off the side of a busy highway.
We crossed back over hwy 17 and into a town called McClellanville. It was a real gem too. An old fishing town known for shrimping that was destroyed by hurricane Hugo in 1989. The population now is around 1,000 people. It was really interesting. A large art culture seemed to be keeping the town alive leaving it to be stunningly beautiful.
We walked through the town and onto another sand road. This one wasn’t packed down as hard and was really hard to push our carts through. We managed though.
Stick started to feel some effects from the Vertigo. We had made it 18 miles. He wanted to go more but I talked him out of it. We found a good spot to set our tents up and get some rest. We ate and he felt better. We decided to stay put even though we had a lot of daylight left.
We retreated to our tents because the bugs were really bad. We actually were warned about this area. Apparently, a guy was out here camping and had to be hospitalized from getting eaten up so bad by mosquitos. We didn’t really believe the story until we got here. They are horrible and ruthless.
We’re safe and sound in our tents though. Another day in the books.
