The guys at the Reviving Lives Ministries house were awesome. They were great hosts for us and the house itself was amazing too. We were well rested when we left.
We headed over to a local breakfast restaurant called The Country Biscuit. The owner had agreed to feed us for free in support of our efforts. The restaurant hosts NA meetings in the evening. Very cool.
We left with full bellies and headed to our starting spot where we met Kelhi. She took our keys because she was going to be driving our car up ahead for us later on. Then we hit the road.
We had a few miles of a dangerous road. We had to really pay attention but we were making it just fine. A woman pulled over and got out to talk to us.
She had seen us on her way to the grocery store and then stopped to talk to us on the way back. She was raising her grandbaby because her daughter was suffering badly with addiction. She gave us $100 donation right there on the side of the road. She had gotten it out for us when she checked out at the store. Amazing.
We approached a really large and long bridge heading out of New Bern. It had beautiful views but the wind prevented us from enjoying much of anything. It was bad. It took us forever to cross it but we pushed on and finally got to the other side. One more obstacle checked off the list.
We now had all back roads. Finally. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I love the backroads. The land, the people, the sounds. All things that are better when away from a highway. These roads didn’t disappoint.
The wind was an issue all day but the kindness of others and friendly waves and smiles from passerbys kept us going. We had to push quickly in the afternoon as a serious rain storm was coming. We made it to our car safely and in time to beat the rain.
We headed to a campground in a town called Chocowinity. Wendy and C.R. with Same Power Ministries put us up in a cabin for two nights to shelter us from the storm. A large dinner was provided as well. We couldn’t believe how nice they were.
They rallied up some friends and they all came out for a nice dinner while we all told stories and felt like family. Absolutely amazing! They had donations for us as well. All of this was put together with only one day’s notice. That’s love right there. They were passionate Christians and were doing great service work in their community. A lot of the things they do help people and families who are touched by addiction. I was truly honored.
We had full bellies and a roof over our head and we were very grateful for both.
