We woke up and went inside the truckstop to have breakfast. We invited our new friend, Daniel, to eat with us but he didn’t order anything. We said goodbye to him as he wanted to get out and try to get a ride during all of the early morning commotion at the truck stop.
We ate and said goodbye to the friends we met there. The waitress who lost her brother and Paul, the Appalachian Trail hiker who was living with dementia. His trail name is Marathon Man. Probably a legend to the hiking world. It was cool to talk with him but hard to watch him struggle with his own mind.
We walked out of there and looked back at the experiences that all happened at the Big Stop in Houlton, Maine. We were pushing up a hill and we were passing a State Police Station when an officer hopped out of his car to see what we were up to.
He was so nice and couldn’t believe that we had come from Key West. He gave us all kinds of fun police swag and took a photo of us in front of their sign. He posted that picture on their facebook page with a nice message. Their page had 106k followers all over Maine. It gained a lot of traction in spreading awareness. It was awesome!
It was a hard day but we fought through it with the amazing support that we were getting. The news interview had aired and people wanted to help. One couple pulled over and gave us cold drinks and snacks and while we were still talking to them, another person pulled over to see what we were up to.
He worked at the university in town and him and his wife own a Bed and Breakfast. He offered to put us up for a few nights. It was huge! We were about to have to spend $160 on a hotel for two nights and we are now able to save that money. We were so thankful.
It took another few hours before we finsished. We had to call our friends Denise and Ashley, who we met a few nights ago, to help us bring our car a few miles up. This way, we could drive to the B&B and get some rest. When we got to the car, we drove through and got dinner and then made it to the B&B. We talked to our hosts and they could tell that we were beat. They showed us to our quarters and let us have it. It was so nice to have a shower and a bed. Like really nice. We have been pushing hard in some serious heat. We felt at home right away.
