We woke up and got ready while the family came out to say goodbye. They gave us breakfast snacks and we took some photos. They also left us with a cash donation. The young child left us with laughs that will last a long time. He was a very cool kid. He is lucky to have his grandparents.
We set out for the hills. It was hot as hades today. Another damn heat wave. We’re getting wrecked by the weather in Maine. It was supposed to be perfect up here, according to plan. That’s the way it goes out here. Oh well, a little struggle only makes this whole thing better.
We had some friends stop by. Jason and Tina from Manifested Mercy came to see us. We’ve been in contact throughout the whole walk and it was so great to finally meet them. They are doing great work in the St. Louis area. They brought cold water and snacks. I hope to catch up with them in their neck of the woods someday. Check them out on Facebook if you can.
We kept going. It was really hot. Nothing we could do about it though. Thankfully we kept meeting awesome people who were giving us cold water. It really makes a difference. One guy gave us cold water and fresh cucumbers from his garden as we passed his house. He then drove up to meet us later with cold Gatorade. He also called the pastor of the church ahead and got permission for us to camp there. So cool.
We stopped at a small rest area where they had a bathroom and picnic table. We figured we would use the toilet while we had the chance. It was one of those nasty ones with no plumbing. Just a huge hole in the ground. You can’t not use one of these while walking across America. It’s bound to happen at least once. Still better than the woods.
We took turns doing what had to be done. Jessie made a funny comment afterwards. She said, “where does it all go, hell?” So yes, we have dubbed these types of bathrooms ‘hell holes’.
We made it to the church. It was early but we were beat from the heat. We had plenty of shade and our internet was working. Two great things to be thankful for out here. We decided to stay for the night.
We set up and ate dinner then laid around being lazy. Then we walked around a little during the pretty sunset. That did it for me. I was out after all that.
