We woke up in our comfy hotel room and hated to leave. We took advantage of the breakfast first though. Then we drove all the way back to our starting point in Brookton.
We left the car there and walked North. We had some pretty big hills to start the day. We were definitely doing a slower pace than normal. My fault I suppose, since I was in front setting the pace. It was ok to go slow, but it definitely made the day seem longer.
We took a break and that is when Jessie’s parents found us during the process of moving our car up ahead for us. They stopped to chat for a while and then say goodbye as this will probably be the last time we see them for a while.
After that, we picked up the pace. The hills were vicious but we are better conditioned for them now and they weren’t bothering us as bad as they used to.
We made it into a town called Dansforth and stopped at a little gas station restaurant for a lunch break. We ate some major carbs and got some energy for two huge hills that we had coming up.
It was only 5 miles but we had two ranges to get over. We knew we would be stopping on the second peak and seeking a place to camp. That was our plan anyways.
We went up the first hill and stopped at the scenic overlook pullout they had for cars. We could look out and see Mount Katahdin, the highest point in Maine and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. A very famous spot for hikers. I waved to the few friends I have who are hiking the trail right now.
We went down and back up again. I got excited and jogged up a part of the last hill. I listen to a lot of inspirational speeches and it triggers me to push harder in the face of an obstacle. It was totally unnecessary but I did feel better when I got to the top.
We were at a scenic lookout that is dubbed ‘the million dollar view’. There is a restaurant on top that just opened yesterday.
We walked in and they were nearly out of food because they had been so busy. Gotta love that. It made me excited that they had such a good grand opening. They were really nice people.
We ate and their grandson was playing with us. He had a crush on Jessie and loved Domino. We asked the family if we could camp on their property and they said ‘of course’ without hesitating. Million dollar campsite for free! Woohoo!
We ate and hung out with the little big kid who was so excited to have us there. We tried to make it a great experience for him to remember but we were also very tired. We had a lot of fun but we were a little relieved when bedtime came. He said goodnight to us and then ran over to my tent to whisper a secret to me. He told me that there was a gun in the bushes in case we see a bear. Then he told me not to use it unless we need it. Ummm… yeah. That happened. This pretty much sums up northern Maine for ya. Anyways, we’ll see them all in the morning and get some pictures.
That reminds me, sorry I haven’t uploaded photos to the blog lately. I try every night but the service isn’t good enough up here. I’m actually on the restaurants wifi just to post this blog now. It is very spotty service up here and I may go a day or two without posting because of it. I will update when I can though.
Getting close to the end!!!
Saw y’all in Danforth today and were curious so googled you! Wish we’d have known about your journey! Best of luck! xoxoxo
Keep going!
