Back at it. Up and early to try to beat the heat. Even at 7 am it was hot. We loaded up and started walking.
Things were going smoothly. A sidewalk most of the way. Just walking and sweating. The road was too busy for people to stop and talk so we were just talking to each other.
We entered Massachusetts and didn’t see a welcome sign so we used the sign for Stateline Adult Video and Magazine store instead. It had a few people laughing so it worked out.
Our 13th state. A very proud moment. Stick had his celebratory cigar and we took a few photos. We of course passed the actual Welcome to Massachusetts sign not too much farther.
The rest of the morning was all about the heat. I was doing ok. Being conditioned was helping out. Lindsay and Thina were getting hit hard by the heat but they fought through it.
We made it to a restaurant called Red Stone Grill where a friend of Lindsay’s told us to go get a meal on him. We stopped and ate and the food was so good!
We knew that would fuel us for the rest of the day. We set back out into the heat. Route 1 was our path. It started off fine. A sidewalk or a good shoulder. Pretty easy walking. Then the shoulder ended and we had to all walk together and try not to die.
The drivers around here definitely earned the named “masshole”. I was leading the way and even with a bright yellow vest, I nearly got hit twice. There were times where I had to swerve into the traffic lane just to force people to move over to give us all space. It wasn’t the worst we’ve had to deal with but it was really bad. Totally unnecessary too. It would’ve been easy for people to move over but they truly just didn’t care. We made it though.
We hustled through the heat and finished at a Bass Pro Shop near Gillette Stadium. Our new friends, Meghan and Nancy, came out to give me a ride back to our support car. It was a huge help. I’m so glad that we all met them.
Once we had the car, we went and grabbed an awesome dinner from a place where Lindsay used to work and then drove to a place called New England Base Camp.
This is a boy scout camp that let us stay for two nights for free. We have an awesome spot. We took showers and set up camp and that was that. Another day down!
Sorry about the drivers… they aren’t the best alas! You just get used to them 🙂 Just wanted to say it was great meeting you all if only very briefly in Dedham at the fire station, best of luck and my best wishes for a successful walk.
