Day 144 – 20 miles – 1,866 total

We woke up at 4 am to bigfoot entering our campsite from the woods. If it wasn’t bigfoot, it was definitely a large animal. Most likely a deer but bigfoot works better for this story. Domino was growling and I clapped my hands and yelled “get out of here!” I said it in a redneck tone to add to the toughness…. “git outta hyuh”. Stick heard it too. I heard him get out and go check it out. I went back to sleep lol.

Woke up again at 6 and didn’t get eaten so that was good. We packed up and thanked the campsite for a safe night’s rest. We headed to Starbucks across the street to use the bathrooms to get ready for the day. Homeless chic.

We were on the road and walking by 7 am. We had a couple of hills early in the day but we handled them with ease. We were feeling great. High spirits and lots of love from friendly passerbys. It was a great morning.

We walked through some awesome towns. The homes were built in the 16, 17, and 1800s. I felt like Paul Revere was going to come flying by on horse at any given moment. We stopped at a service station for a rest.

While sitting there, the staff all came out and talked to us about our walk. One of the customers was breaking down and came to thank us. His son is suffering with addiction. The staff was awesome. The owner let us hang out for a while and before we left, he gave us a $100 donation. It was a total surprise and it hit me hard. I was so grateful that I had to compose myself before continuing.

We walked on. In our last town of the day, Clinton, we were being treated like we were famous. Everyone was stopping and waving and saying that they saw us on the news. I went live on Facebook to talk about the day and during the video, a woman came over with her 12 year old son and his friend. We got to talk to them about the dangers of drugs right there on the side of the road. I was in tears as they walked away. I felt a strong presence of my sister there.

As I was taking a breather and composing myself, still live on Facebook, another man walked up and talked to us. He lost an uncle to addiction. It was so sad to me that such a nice town was so impacted by our cause. We haven’t found a place yet that is immune to it.

We gathered ourselves together and continued to our ending point. We were excited to meet Ann. She offered us her beach house for the night. We walked there and it was so beautiful.

She was there prepping dinner for us with ingredients from her garden. Amazing. We sat and talked for a little over an hour. I am glad we spent that time together. It helped us get comfortable and feel at home. I assume that it may have helped her as well being that she was letting us stay in her home and she didn’t know us. We all felt like family by the time she left.

We cooked dinner that she prepped for us and then sat and relaxed in a beautiful beach house all to ourselves. Stick walked down to the beach, I stayed in and watched World Cup. Domino stared out the window.

Amazing day with kindness as the highlight. A day filled with clear evidence of higher forces driving us along.
