We woke up early and were packed up and gone before the park opened. We walked through Historic Jamestown and 3/4 mile later we started the Virginia Capital Trail. It’s a paved bike that is 51.2 miles and ends in Richmond, VA. We decided that we were going to try to do it in two days.
The trail was amazing. Windy and hilly but that just kept it interesting. There were a lot of cyclists using it. Most of our day consisted of speaking to the ones who stopped to see what we were up to.
We met a cyclist who has ridden his bike across the country and was out on a 4 day cruise. We met a couple from Quebec. A group of nice ladies who brought us lunch as they passed us again on their way back. A mean old guy who I had to get firm with when talking about the drug crisis. And many others. A day full of characters. It was nice.
The trail was great. Rolling hills and farms all around. The weather was probably our best day yet. No complaints at all.
At our usual 20 mile point we decided that we were feeling good and wanted to keep going. There was a restaurant there so we decided to stop in for a bite.
It looked like a fancy place so we checked the menu prices before ordering and they were steep but not too steep. We decided to eat. It was kind of weird to have a single fancy restaurant in the middle of nowhere on a bike trail but whatever, we’ve seen weirder.
After fueling up and topping off our water bottles we got back to the trail. The sun was getting lower and the temperature was really comfortable. We made it 28 miles then we decided to set up camp because it was going to get dark soon. Stick tried to get me to keep going but I wasn’t budging. I was done. I think he was just messing with me because I did it to him yesterday.
We set up and ate dinner. Then we hung our food bags up since we are camped between a patch of woods and a creek. Being in Virginia the chance of a black bear living nearby is higher than we’ve had all trip. We decided to play it safe.
That was that. Another day on the road!
Looks like a trail to ride my bike on. Will check it out the next time I’m down that way. I really like the way you guys take the back roads and meet so many people along the way to share your message with. The opiate crisis is worse that I thought when you first began the trip. You definitely are raising awareness. Awesome!
