It was really cold in the morning but I had what I needed to stay warm. I was all huddled up comfortably in my sleeping bag and Domino was comfortable in hers. I waited until the sun was up a little and then started packing up. Stick was already standing outside ready to go. He had a rough night. His cot-tent hasn’t been holding up well in the cooler temperatures. Too much condensation is building up inside and his stuff is getting wet. Cold AND wet isn’t a good thing at all. We decided that we would do something to address that issue.
We got walking and made it to a gas station in a few miles. We ended up grabbing some breakfast there. I had 2 Clif bars and some chex mix with me that I had planned on eating for breakfast but I couldn’t pass up the breakfast bowl that the clerk made herself at home. It was amazing and perfect for getting the energy I needed for the next few miles. We ate and by then it was warming up. We were shedding layers of clothing as the sun got higher and higher.
We passed by a guy laying on the side of the road in some pinestraw and he was clearly homeless. I asked him if he was hungry and he nodded. I gave him the Clif bars and the chex mix. Not the best breakfast but it was all I had. He seemed to be grateful. We kept on going.
Hwy 17 had a small shoulder but there was very light traffic all morning. We were loving it. Beautiful weather and traveling between small towns in Georgia. It was panning out to be a great day.
My sister and her boyfriend who live in Jacksonville came up to bring the support car to us. We knew that we were going to take tomorrow off so it worked out great to have the car to run around and get some errands done. My brother who lives in Savannah will come and get it and bring it up to Savannah sometime next week. Just moving it right along…
It was great to see Lauren and Ryan again. They really helped us out a lot by letting us stay with them and moving our car so far for us. While they were here we were also able to get help with a huge problem that popped up for me and Stick.
There were two bridges that we had to cross and there was no way to do it with the carts. Too dangerous. So they were able to take our car that we loaded the carts onto and park it on the other side of the bridge. Then me and Stick walked without the carts on the bridge. It was safe because they had a little sidewalk type ledge but it was too narrow for the carts. So that was huge to be able to get over the bridges safely. One obstacle at a time!
When we got to our car on the other side of the bridge it was the end of our walking day. It was right at 20 miles. We planned it that way. We got in the car and drove to the campsite that Kelli had booked for us. When we got there, we had an interview set up with the local paper in Brunswick. Kelli also came by to say hello. We all hung out for a while and had some really great conversation.
Then it was time to eat!!! We went to downtown Brunswick and ate at a place called Fox’s Pizza. It was really good. There was an Elvis convention in town too so things got a little weird. Thankfully, Stick and I were too tired to go chasing down Elvis impersonators so we left early and went back to our campsite to get some rest.
Good night
Did you cross the big suspension bridge on 17 (Sidney Lanier Bridge), or was it the Old Jacksonville Highway bridge on 303? I was curious because on Google maps, the suspension bridge looks like it has wide shoulders, but the 303 bridge just has a tiny raised ledge. I’m planning to attempt the ECG in January, so I was curious…..Thanks!
Hey Bonnie. I can’t wait to follow your journey! We took the 303 here. We were not able to use our carts due to that ledge. We had our carts transported across for us. Walking without the carts was fine. Feel free to email me and I’ll help anyway that I can! Brettbramblewalks@gmail.com
