Day 49 – 20 miles – 711 total

e got dropped off by my brother early in the morning and then went to Denny’s to eat breakfast before starting the walk. It was just me and Stick today. Domino was back at my brother’s house and Shane decided that he would meet up with us later and drive around and do some filming. Me and Stick started the day being exhausted. We needed a day off bad.

We ate a big breakfast and procrastinated as long as possible. Then we had to get to steppin. We had a big challenge all day with the roads that we were on. Sometimes there was a nice wide shoulder but other times there was none at all and we had to push the carts through the grass off the side of the road which wasn’t easy at all in some places.

We still had fun though. Shane came and was filming us as we went along. I never know how I truly feel about the cameras but one thing for sure is that it is fun to see people’s reactions to you while being filmed. That part I like. It’s a little bit of an ego trip but sometimes it’s ok to enjoy that I think. I try my best not to let all that get to my head though. This whole thing is definitely not about me and I understand that. Something happened next that reminded me of why I am walking….

A woman was waiting for us at an intersection up ahead. Stick got there first and I came in a few minutes later. Farrah had been following us on facebook and communicating with us for a few months now and she was able to find us on the side of the road. She brought the ashes of her son Tony with her, displayed in a beautiful glass-blown urn. It was a very heavy moment for us all but we all fought through the hard stuff just enough to show that we support each other. As soon as we said goodbye and I turned away I lost it. I imagine that Farrah shed some tears then also. For me, they were good tears but it was still very hard. It just isn’t fair that so many amazing people are dying.

It was a very quiet next few miles. Stick stayed back as he was having his moments and processing all that just took place. I walked on without headphones and let the moment with Tony and Farrah lead the way for me. I was actually very cheerful shortly after. The good cry allowed me to release the sadness and then enjoy the positive side of things. I was honored and grateful to be alive and on an adventure.

The film crew showed up and we did some roadside interviews. I can’t even remember what it was about but I am pretty sure that I cried again on camera. Got all that out of the way and planned out the rest of the weekend with the production crew. They left and Shane stayed and continued to get shots of us walking all day.

We walked hard and after a very challenging day we made our 20 miles. We were both proud. We had come far. We made it to Savannah on schedule and had walked every mile to get there. We needed a break though. We both knew it.

Shane did some interviews with us and we said goodbye to him for now. We hope he joins us later on. Cameron, my brother, came to pick us up and we headed back to his house where we ate and did some more filming with the production crew for the Anything For A Fix documentary. That is the name of the documentary they are doing about this walk. Anyways, once all that was over with I was spent and ready to crash hard.
